Built around 1670 as a residence for Imam Bil'arab bin Sultan Al Ya'rubi, this castle became a centre of learning in astronomy, medicine, and Islamic law, and for a time the seat of power in Oman. It is best known for its painted ceilings with their arabesque motifs, alongside carved wooden doors and mashrabiya screens. The Imam is buried within its walls. The castle was restored between 1979 and 1983.
