Yenkit is a small village on Muscat's eastern coast, just off the road to Sifah, prized for a narrow rocky inlet that travelers compare to a Norwegian fjord. Two hiking routes, each under five kilometers round trip, lead along the western and eastern sides of the inlet to striking cliff top viewpoints. It sits about forty minutes from the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, though the trek is fully exposed to the sun and the rocky shoreline is not suited for swimming.

Fahal Island rises about four kilometers off Muscat's Qurm beach, its limestone cliffs formed from seabed sediment some 35 to 55 million years ago and later pushed above the waves. The waters around it hold colorful coral reefs and rich marine life, making it one of Muscat's best known diving and snorkeling spots, and it is nicknamed Shark Island for the reef sharks often seen in its shallows. Because the island is a protected natural reserve, visits and dives require prior authorization from the relevant authorities.

Souq Al Hafah is the oldest market in all of Dhofar, known historically as Souq Al Harjaa, and sits about three kilometres from central Salalah among coconut palms along the coast. The famed traveller Ibn Battuta is said to have visited, along with the geographer Ibn Al Mujawir, and a document bearing Sultan Taimur's own seal from 1342 AH still speaks to its long trading history. Today it remains the place to shop for Omani frankincense, dairy products, traditional textiles, heritage clothing and gold and silver ornaments.

Rising about ninety eight metres straight out of the Arabian Sea near Duqm, Hamar Rock is a limestone column that fishermen have long used as a landmark to judge their distance from shore. Six kilometres from Nafoun Beach in Al Wusta, its cliffs host migratory birds of many kinds and the surrounding waters draw humpback whales. Duqm's Special Economic Zone now promotes it to divers and geology enthusiasts drawn to its unusual profile. It remains best appreciated from a boat, since the rock stands alone in open water.

Straddling the border between Al Buraimi and the UAE's Al Ain, Jebel Al Qatar is a run of mountain slopes nicknamed the Hanging Gardens for the greenery that clings to its cliffs. Visitors come for desert safari drives through the slopes and for camping trips that take in the mountain scenery after sunset. Hiking trails wind through its gorges, making it a favourite half day escape for residents of both border towns. Its position right on the corridor between the two cities makes it an easy add on to any visit to the governorate.

The plantations that ring Salalah turn the city into a green oasis unlike anywhere else in Oman, with coconut, banana and papaya trees planted along the coastal roads. Families from Dhofar walk the shaded paths between the trees and stop at roadside stalls for fresh juice, especially once the khareef season cools the air. The farms cluster thickest near Haffa Beach, just a couple of kilometres from the city centre, where growers sell produce straight from the field. It is one of the simplest and most familiar outings for local families.

Shannah is the departure point for the passenger and vehicle ferries that cross to Masirah Island, a ninety minute sailing operated by the National Ferry Company from a port protected by a substantial breakwater. Beyond its role as a transit hub, the surrounding tidal flats around Barr Al Hickman are recognised as one of the richest birdwatching grounds on Oman's coast. Waders and migratory species gather here in numbers that draw dedicated birders and photographers from across the region. For most visitors it is a working port town, but for naturalists it is a destination in its own right.

Ras Abu Ar Rasas marks the southern tip of Masirah Island in Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate, where the calm turquoise waters of the western shore meet the pounding surf of the open Arabian Sea on the eastern side. The point sits barely a meter above sea level and is a busy traditional fishing ground, with the conical Jabal Suwayr rising nearby to the north. Visitors come for the dramatic contrast of the two coastlines, for swimming and snorkeling, and for sunset views over the water.

Old Ibri Souq sits in the heart of Ibri city in Ad Dhahirah Governorate, right beside the four hundred year old Ibri Fort. Livestock and sheep change hands here every morning, and the market follows an Islamic style layout that includes dedicated sections such as its gold shops. Local residents have long called for the souq to be restored, and a recent development proposal submitted to the governorate office envisions markets for dates, fish, produce, and livestock alongside a hotel and gardens overlooking the surrounding farms.

Al Qanatir is one of the oldest quarters in Ibra, with settlement said to reach back to the third millennium BC. The neighborhood takes its name from the many stone arches built at the entrance of its lanes, and its old stone houses are grouped into several small districts such as Kasham, Matrah and Al Maqtoura. At its heart stands Al Qanatir Mosque, first built in 1077 AH (1666 CE) and restored in 1409 AH (1989), once used to teach religious sciences and Arabic. The quarter still carries the quiet weight of its history, its narrow alleys and stone walls waiting for restoration.

East of Ibri, Jabal Al Sarah climbs to roughly two thousand five hundred metres, the highest plateau in Al Dhahirah governorate, with a summer climate mild enough that temperatures rarely pass twenty five degrees. In winter the mountain turns properly cold, and on its harshest nights the water collected in its pools has been recorded freezing solid alongside frosted leaves and snow dusted rock, a rare sight anywhere in Oman. The plateau is reached via Al Hajar and Wadi Al Ain, or through Bahla and Wadi Ghoul toward Al Hamra, and is dotted with small inhabited villages. The unpaved approach roads keep it far from the usual tourist trail, which is part of its appeal to those chasing an unusual winter scene.

Al Ashkharah Fishing Port sits on the southeastern coast of Oman in Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate, about three and a half hours by road from Muscat. Wave breakers and floating docks shelter traditional fishing boats and larger vessels that head out for kingfish, tuna, shrimp, and lobster. Visitors can watch boats return with the daily catch, buy fresh seafood straight off the boats, and arrange fishing trips or marine excursions with local fishermen, alongside chances to spot gulls and dolphins offshore.

Nafun Beach lies a short drive north of Duqm in Al Wusta, next to Nafun, a small coastal village on the Arabian Sea. It is a favorite overnight camping spot, set on slightly raised ground above the sand with a viewing tower, a children's playground and marked camping spots. It offers a quiet coastal stop for visitors touring the Duqm coastline.

Khasab Corniche is the seafront promenade of Khasab, Musandam's main town, running along the mouth of the khor where the mountains meet the sea. It is a gathering place for local fishermen and a spot for cheap seafood stalls, and in the evening it draws locals and visitors for the cool breeze and views over the calm inlet. It offers an easy, unhurried way to feel the daily rhythm of this fjord town at the northern tip of Oman.

Hisn Al Wasil was raised by the Al Hajriyeen in the seventh Islamic century as the first and largest fort built in the wilayat of Bidiyah, North Ash Sharqiyah Governorate. It carries several defensive towers along with an internal souq, and the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture later restored it into a tourist attraction that displays traditional heritage pieces. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has since signed a development and operation agreement with Al Wasil Investment Company to turn the fort into a fuller cultural and tourism destination for the region.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Sohar opened on 28 October 2016 as one of the newest large mosques in the Gulf, built in an Uzbek style recalling the Bibi Khanym Mosque with soaring domes and intricate carving. Its main prayer hall holds forty six hundred worshippers alongside a prayer hall for women that holds seven hundred forty, and four minarets rise over eighty four meters above the one hundred eighty one thousand square meter site, which also houses classrooms, a multipurpose hall, a majlis, and a large public library. It sits a short distance from Sohar Fort on the road toward Dubai, and non Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times if dressed modestly.

Ras Al Markaz is a stretch of pale, undisturbed beach on the Al Wusta coast, reached by a rough coastal track roughly an hour south of Duqm town. Sedimentary cliffs rise up to 40 metres behind the sand in bands of colour, casting shade that makes it a popular overnight camping spot, and the water is good for swimming, snorkelling and angling. A 4x4 is needed for the final stretch across the mud flats, and visitors are warned to stay alert for flash floods after rain.

Muqal Cave is a natural limestone cave tucked into Wadi Bani Khalid, about a kilometre up the wadi and roughly 500 metres from the main freshwater pools, in Ash Sharqiyah North. It has two entrances and a moderate scramble inside, which adventurous visitors often combine with a swim in the wadi's turquoise pools. It is one of the best known among the thousands of caves scattered across Oman's interior.

Al Safala Castle stands in the village of Afi within the wilayat of Wadi Al Maawil, Al Batinah South Governorate, and serves as the official emblem of the wilayat. Its mosque, Al Safala Mosque, was built more than three centuries ago and still stands as a towering presence at the heart of the settlement, making the castle the clearest symbol of the local heritage.

Hamasa is one of the oldest historic quarters in Al Buraimi, built more than five centuries ago around a market and several fortified towers. One tower has already been restored by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, and the quarter's old souq, with its distinctive layout of stalls and storerooms, points to what was once a busy trading life. Most houses are simple single-storey stone buildings, and the governorate is now working with the University of Al Buraimi to fully document the quarter before restoring it as a heritage village with guesthouses, cafes and craft shops for visitors.

Rakhyut Fort Museum occupies the historic fort at the center of Rakhyut Wilayat in Dhofar Governorate, a structure local residents first built in 1525 for coastal defense. The fort was rebuilt during the era of Sultan Taimur bin Faisal after a 1925 visit and rebuilt again under Sultan Qaboos bin Said, with restoration completing in 2013. Researcher Hamed bin Said Akak later founded the museum inside it, reopening the site on 20 November 2025 as a cultural venue for national and heritage events that drew over six thousand visitors of different nationalities that year.

Wadi Al Nakheel, also known locally as Khor Senaq, is a hidden valley near Hasik in eastern Dhofar, roughly two hours by road from Salalah. Dramatic cliffs frame a natural fjord lined with date palms, reached only by unmarked, rugged trails. It remains one of Dhofar's most remote, untouched spots, better suited to adventurous travelers than casual visitors.

Wadi Hawer lies in Bid'ah village within the wilayat of Wadi Bani Khalid, close to the famous Wadi Bani Khalid it is often compared to. Visitors describe its water as clearer and colder than its well known neighbor, with a deep pool carved into the rock reaching around twenty meters. It remains a quieter alternative for travelers exploring the wadis of North Sharqiyah.

Souq Al Tarif is the main market of Wilayat Al Musannah in Al Batinah South, set in the Al Tarif neighborhood that gives it its name. Residents visit daily for fresh fish, vegetables, and everyday household needs, alongside clothing, electronics, and banking services. Local news has also reported development plans for the souq as part of wider projects planned for the wilayat.
