South Al Batinah backs up against the Hajar mountains, and that's where the drive gets good — Nakhal Fort under the cliffs, the hot springs at Ain Al Thawarah, Rustaq's souq and fort a bit further in. Barka handles the calmer, closer-to-Muscat side of the coast.
